Making rock shadows
Performed sculpture, text
2014

6 rocks are in the sand.
They are a line - an arc shaped line.
Each rock casts a shadow on the sand.
A line is drawn to mark the edge of the shadow.
Sand is scooped from around and built up ontop inside the shadow line.
Sand is moved and patted down with the hands and feet to make a mound.
One edge of the sand mound joins with the rock.
This edge is made sharp.
The back of the thumb nail presses it’s join precisely.
The other edge of the sand mound meets with the flat of the beach.
The finger tips shape this edge.
It is softer, smoother.
A mound is made for each of the rocks.
The bigger the rock, the steeper the sides of it’s mound.
Dents are made in the surrounding sand where I have knelt with my knees, rested my hand or stood or walked around the mounds.
These dents are filled in.
The repair of the dents uses the same moving, scooping and patting down.
The shadow of the rock is a cross section of the sand mound I have made.
If the shadow could pivot on one side, move in an arc, it would trace the shape of the sand mound.
The sea comes in.
Nobody else is here.
No photographs are taken.
