About Traversing sculpture, moving image and performance, Freckleton’s practice addresses the physicality of vision and the role of the body in perception. Her research into the nature of seeing in the age of the digitised image manifests in a practice that prioritises work in progress. Studio processes such as moulding, forming, painting or drawing are acted out in performed activities or displayed live. Painted, printed, and projected surfaces sit next to ceramic, plaster and found objects. Things that are often considered secondary or preparatory (tools, materials, left-overs, offcuts) are presented with equal standing to more intentional outcomes. Making is intuitive, experimental and prolific - ceramics (particularly the process of working with clay - often in its most liquid forms) is an important part of Freckleton’s negotiation with the spatial, temporal and corporeal aspects of visual perception. Increasingly she has brought digital image processing into her studio experimentation - considering things such reviewing, selecting and editing of photo and video in the same way as shaping clay or applying paint. For the last few years Freckleton has become solely preoccupied with a lost work 'Wet Sand' (part performance, part sculptural intervention, and not captured visually) which now forms the basis of her studio experimentation - this work has become the frame for all future works. All works refer back to this work. Everything she does is an investigation, a dissection, a dream, a lament of this special encounter. |
